Esperance2 seabirds near Esperance tested positive for H5N1, reaching Australia’s mainland.

Australia was the only continent without a confirmed mainland case; migratory flyways, not trade, brought the virus to Esperance.

If H5N1 reaches commercial poultry, mass culling follows; Agriculture Minister Julie Collins said containment cannot be guaranteed.
