Google Retires Voice Assistant

Mountain ViewGemini replaces Assistant on 4 September.

Assistant matched fixed commands and ran locally; Gemini interprets probabilistically and mostly needs a round trip to a data centre.

After September 4 users cannot opt back into Assistant; Google has not detailed support for older, low-end phones.
