Nickel Boom Runs On Coal

JakartaIndonesia’s nickel boom runs on private coal plants.

These “captive” plants sit outside Indonesia’s coal phase-out and climate-financing commitments.

Captive capacity reached 19.3 gigawatts by July 2025, nearly matching Germany’s coal fleet, a monitoring group found.

Nearly 8 more gigawatts are planned, mostly tied to nickel plants in Central Sulawesi.
