Electric cars took 27.7% of EU sales in August.

Chinese-owned groups grew 71% and now sell 1 in 9 new cars, while Volkswagen, BMW and Mercedes-Benz fell 1.1%.

Petrol reached €2.092 a litre and diesel €2.226 in the week from 21 September, the Commission’s highest since 2005.

EY’s Constantin Gall warned EV sales “could fall sharply if the subsidies end.”

Proposed “Made in Europe” battery rules could add about €2,100 to an electric car’s cost.
