South Africa’s steelworks have closed, its first green steel ventures have faltered, and jobs are gone.
Experts say South Africa has ports and iron ore waste, Namibia has cheap renewable hydrogen, and Zimbabwe has chromium for stainless steel.
“We’ve put forward this idea of a green corridor of cooperation,” said Leanne Govindsamy of Southern Transitions.
The Southern African Development Community’s 16 members agreed in January to pursue a regional just steel transition partnership.
