The bare-throated bellbird and red-legged seriema join the white bellbird as the loudest birds known.
Researchers used golf-style laser rangefinders to correct amplitude for distance, a method that let them measure 123 species in the wild.
“We wanted to know the softest species we could get, and the loudest species we could get,” said João Menezes, the study’s co-author.
It’s still unclear which of the three species is definitively loudest, given differences in how each was measured.
