SydneyNew South Wales approved Hunter Valley coal mining until 2045.
The Independent Planning Commission ruled those emissions are outweighed by jobs, royalties and tax revenue.
Glencore and Yancoal estimate the project will emit 809 million tonnes of CO2-equivalent, 794 million from coal burned overseas.
“It will go down in history as an infamous betrayal of the public trust,” said Lock the Gate Alliance’s Georgina Woods.
The project still needs federal environmental approval, expected before the end of the year.
