The coast guard says the ship may have collected data near undersea cable corridors in the Luzon Strait.
The 97-metre BRP Teresa Magbanua closed to 100 yards of the JIA HAI KE 7, which the coast guard says was spoofing its location.
The Chinese embassy in Manila says the ship was conducting normal operations in waters under China’s jurisdiction.
A China Coast Guard vessel has moved in to try to shield it, and the operation continues.
