A fisher’s trips once earned 1,000-2,000 dinars and now sometimes under 300.

Libya’s small-boat fishers blame industrial bottom trawling far offshore for depleted stocks and damaged seabed habitats.

Giant red shrimp live 400-800 metres down between Sicily and Libya, and trawlers from Mazara del Vallo have long targeted them.

“Fish stocks have declined, while trawlers operate in deeper waters and leave very little for us,” said Faraj Abdelsadiq.
