A 7.7 earthquake toppled a tower in Penonomé.

The US Geological Survey says 4.6 million people felt moderate to severe shaking.

It struck 12.6km deep near Pitaloza Arriba in Herrera province, and tsunami warnings covered Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Peru and Mexico.

Panama’s geological institute rated it 7.2, and the Panama Canal was not affected.

Casualty counts are not yet in, and Panama’s education ministry has closed schools nationwide.
