MultanPunjab’s Crime Control Department says suspect Tauqeer died in crossfire.
Tauqeer was accused of running over his 14-year-old employee, and he never reached a courtroom.
The department says he escaped custody during a three-day remand and died when officers stopped two motorcyclists in Bahawalpur.
“How is it possible that handcuffed suspects, surrounded by armed policemen, manage to escape in case after case?” asked lawyer Shazia Nimai.
The department rejects the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan’s charge that it stages encounters.
