South Korea’s anti-piracy unit would double its radius to 1,930km.

The expansion answers pressure from US President Donald Trump to back the war on Iran.

The anti-piracy mandate would reach Duqm in Oman, 650km from Hormuz, with 75 more personnel and a P-8A aircraft.

“It is not a clever solution but a deceptive workaround,” said Kim Joon-hyung, floor leader of the Rebuilding Korea Party.

The cabinet endorses the motion next week, then the National Assembly votes before the mandate lapses.
