The real was at its weakest as the campaign closed in disorder: the final debate was cancelled two days before the vote, and the deposit insurer's $7.7bn payout for Banco Master's collapse hung over the race. It strengthened once the first round was counted, with Flávio Bolsonaro beating Lula 47% to 45.1% and the presidency going to a runoff.
