Barclays reported a quarter that missed estimates and paired it with a trade: 5,000 jobs cut, about 5% of staff, in a 'technology-enabled' cost drive built on AI, while shareholders get a buyback. It is one of the first big banks to name AI as the reason for cuts at this scale, and they fall on back-office and operations staff, many in India and the UK.
