The pump price passed $4.03 a gallon, above the 2012 peak, as the Iran war pushed crude through the Strait of Hormuz into every downstream fuel: US diesel set its own record at $5.85 a gallon, hitting California trucking and farms. The same war premium reached South African petrol, which rose R1.34 a litre despite a stronger rand.
