Beekeepers can medicate managed hives, but the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture found unmanaged feral colonies, which quietly pollinate much of the state’s crops, would go undefended.
The mite is already devastating mainland Australian hives, and Tasmania remains uninfested for now.
