A generation outsources empathy to software that can’t feel it.

Users risk mistaking machine programming for care, weakening the skill of understanding real people.

Sherry Turkle, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology psychologist, says companion chatbots like ChatGPT and Replika inverted her 1984 “second self” metaphor.

“When you are given time to get back to your life, it’s been diminished,” Turkle said.

Turkle’s book “Artificial Intimacy: Who We Become When We Talk to Machines” publishes September 29.
