Nigeria’s regulator lost power to suspend mosque trustees.

The Corporate Affairs Commission could suspend trustees of any church, mosque or charity and appoint interim managers.

Lawyer Emmanuel Ekpenyong’s 2020 suit won a unanimous three-judge ruling that 8 sections breach freedoms of religion, association and assembly.

The court kept the commission’s wider regulatory role and trimmed, rather than voided, Section 851 on its administrative committee.

Either side can still appeal to the Supreme Court, whose ruling is final.
