Police kept detaining protesters despite a Supreme Court ban.

India’s Supreme Court barred detaining peaceful, unarmed protesters outside legal procedure on Sunday.

Protesters oppose Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, and Delhi Police have registered more than 20 criminal cases over Saturday’s march.

“Brute force has been used against people who were protesting peacefully,” said Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader John Brittas.

The court is also hearing a contempt plea alleging wilful disobedience of its 9 October order.
