Greenland’s parliament unanimously asked for a deep-sea mining ban.

It came a day after US President Donald Trump said exploration was about to begin.

The ban would run to at least 2029, shielding fisheries and hunting, while minerals are seen as a path to independence from Denmark.

“There’s no Greenlandic barrels of oil on ground in any near future,” said Naaja Nathanielsen, Greenland’s member of Denmark’s parliament.

The government drafts the bill and may extend the moratorium in 2-year increments.
