Novartis’s pill cut relapses 35.2% and 31.2%.

It beat Sanofi’s Aubagio but trails Roche’s fenebrutinib, which cut relapses by more than 50%.

Both drugs block Bruton’s tyrosine kinase, quieting B cells and microglia, but liver injury has tripped up similar drugs with regulators.

“We haven’t really seen a liver signal at all,” said Heinz Wiendl, a University of Freiburg neurologist.

Some analysts doubt US regulators will approve fenebrutinib, after rejecting Sanofi’s tolebrutinib over liver safety.
