The monastery’s archbishop intends to sign a deal with Cairo over its land.

Egypt’s July draft would put the monastery and its surroundings in state hands for the first time.

The Ismailia Court of Appeals ruled in 2025 that the state owns the land, leaving the monks usufruct rights over most of it.

The former archbishop condemned the deal on Saturday, saying the community is being pressured to accept.

The court adjourned the monastery’s challenge to the ruling until 27 December.
