Taiwan’s map shows 53 Chinese ships, 34 of them warships.

They sit off Japan, Taiwan and the Philippines at once, security chief Joseph Wu said.

The carrier Liaoning’s group sits east of the Philippines, with formations off Taiwan’s east and southeast and three off southern Japan.

China’s Defence Ministry said this month the Liaoning’s drills are routine and not aimed at any country.

A Taiwanese security official says a Liaoning move north would signal pressure on Japan’s defence posture.
