IslamabadRetired Lieutenant General Nauman Mahmood will run the Makkah Defence Alliance.
The alliance of Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkey gets its first secretary-general, based in Riyadh.
Mahmood was appointed on 23 September and is expected to assume his responsibilities in Riyadh soon, the Foreign Office said.
Pakistan will keep mediating between Iran and the US, its Foreign Office said, alongside Qatar.
