Pakistan Presses India on Treaty

New YorkPakistan says arbitration reaffirmed the Indus Waters Treaty remains binding.

The treaty governs river water for most of Pakistan’s 240 million people and irrigated farmland.

India suspended the 1960 treaty last April, though it has no exit clause, and boycotted the arbitration that ruled against it.

The court of arbitration’s ruling carries no enforcement mechanism, leaving India’s suspension in practical effect.
