LondonA World Gold Council survey counts 370 tonnes of tokenised gold.
That is worth $45bn to $55bn, about 8% of global gold exchange-traded fund holdings.
A token represents a fraction of physical bullion held by a third-party provider or mint, unlike an ETF’s fund shares.
David Tait, the council’s chief executive, said “demand cannot scale without the right infrastructure behind it.”
The council expects the market to grow about 27% a year to as much as $170bn by 2031.
