Four carriers will explore a joint bid for satellite-phone spectrum.

Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Telefónica and Vodafone want an alternative to Starlink’s 11,000-plus satellites.

The prize is the 2 GHz band, held by US firms Viasat and EchoStar until their licences expire next year.

They would build ground stations and partner with a satellite provider not yet chosen, as Eutelsat trails Starlink far behind.

The US ambassador to the EU warned last week of devastating retaliation if Brussels keeps its proposal.
